A Realistic High-Temperature Picture
Pure nickel has a real high-temperature envelope, and it is worth stating precisely. Its signature hot application is concentrated and molten caustic alkali service — caustic evaporators and handling equipment at 300-450°C are built from pure nickel because few metals match it there. It also resists oxidation in air up to roughly 800°C through a protective oxide scale. What it is not: it is not a gas-turbine or combustion-chamber material (those are nickel superalloys), its strength falls steadily above about 600°C like any unalloyed metal, and high-temperature sulfur-bearing atmospheres attack nickel severely through low-melting nickel sulfides. If your service is caustic, oxidizing air, or reducing media within these limits, Ni200/Ni201 rod is a documented answer — if it runs hot sulfur, send the composition and we will steer you to a suitable alloy instead.

Technical Details
The High-Temperature Envelope, Honest Version
Nickel 200/201 keep useful mechanical properties to roughly 600°C in structural service, and resist oxidation in air to about 800°C. The metal's celebrated hot duty, though, is caustic: concentrated sodium and potassium hydroxide at 300-450°C, where nickel's combination of corrosion resistance and strength is the reason evaporators, concentrators and caustic piping are specified in pure nickel. Above 600°C for load-bearing parts, or in sulfur-bearing atmospheres at temperature, the design should move to a nickel alloy or other family — and our engineers will tell you so rather than take the order.
Ni200 vs Ni201: Carbon Decides Above 315°C
The two grades differ only in carbon — Ni200 at 0.15% max, Ni201 at 0.02% max — and that difference appears in service. Held between roughly 315°C and 760°C, carbon in Ni200 can precipitate at grain boundaries and embrittle the metal over time; Ni201's low carbon avoids that mechanism, which is why sustained high-temperature duty is specified in the Pure Nickel Series as Ni201. Below that range, or where exposure is intermittent, Ni200 remains the general-purpose workhorse.
