Nickel bar leaves the mill in one of three surface states, and the choice follows the first operation a shop performs. Bright bar is cold drawn or polished, so the diameter is set by the final pass and the surface carries no oxide layer. Peeled bar is turned to take the hot-worked skin off, which suits parts where the outer layer has to be clean but fine dimensional control is not needed. Black bar is supplied as hot worked with the scale intact, and it is the economical choice where the whole surface is machined away.
Cold drawing gives the closest dimensional control of the three, and it is the state most often ordered for bar-fed machines and for parts that are turned, threaded or polished without a preliminary roughing cut. Bright describes the outside of the bar, not its chemistry. A cold-drawn or polished bar has a smooth, oxide-free surface that can be chucked and fed without a cleanup pass, and the finish is even along the length because the last reduction is taken cold. Purity and mechanical properties do not change with the finish.
The final cold reduction sizes the bar and straightens it in a single pass, so diameter tolerance, ovality and straightness are established in one operation rather than in a later step. That matters on bar feeders and on automatic lathes, where a bent bar stops the cycle. Diameters from 3 mm to 300 mm are produced this way, and lengths up to 6000 mm are supplied in the bar program.
A drawing that calls for a bright finish is asking for a cold-drawn or polished surface with the dimension taken from the finished pass. Peeled bar covers the case where scale has to be removed and the diameter is not critical. Black bar is ordered where the shop machines the full surface and wants the lowest cost per kilogram. Where the drawing is silent, the first operation usually decides it.
The finish supplied is written into the offer, the packing list and the label on the wooden case, so a consignment can be checked against the order without opening the bundle. Each lot is gauged against the drawing for diameter, straightness and surface condition before packing, and the heat is analysed for composition at the melt. The mill test certificate (EN 10204 3.1) issued for the lot records that composition and the mechanical results.
